Nearly 1 million downloads achieved by the development of a Hungarian student

A former ELTE student developed a highly successful mobile application at the EIT ICT Labs Master School in Helsinki

Since October 2013, SongArc has been downloaded more than 950,000 times, thus has become the most popular music game app and is ranked number six in the Windows Phone Store. The chief designer of the app, Ádám Kapos got acquainted with developing mobile phone game apps as a student at the Software Development BSc programme of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). At the moment, he studies in Helsinki, at the Master School of the ICT innovation community of the European Union and he will continue his studies in Budapest at ELTE after September.

The SongArc success story

“The EIT ICT Labs Master School boosted the development of the music game app considerably, since here I can get a high-level education both in service design and engineering as well as in business development from the best experts of Finland. It was particularly appealing for me that I could study at Aalto University, because Finland has a vibrant startup scene.” In SongArc, one tries to touch the dropping geometric, colourful forms before they touch the bottom. The forms drop in accordance with the music the player has chosen, creating the illusion that he or she is actually playing the song. Ádám Kapos started studying game development at the ELTE Faculty of Informatics and his first app, RumRun was awarded 3rd price on Microsoft Imagine Cup in Australia, as a member of the Turtle Games team. Turtle Gams has created the SongArc programme together with András Velvárt and it was finalized with the support of the Finnish app accelerator AppCampus.

EIT ICT Labs Master School – in Central Europe only at ELTE and BME

“The purpose is that ICT students, similarly to Ádám, make a hit of their ideas, therefore with the EIT ICT Labs master’s programmes we create a new education model in Hungary. Those students who want to spend the second year of the programme in Hungary can study at one out of 7 universities of 5 countries in the first year. In Budapest, students can choose three technical majors: Service Design and Engineering (SDE), Security and Privacy (S&P), and Digital Media Technology (DMT). Besides high-level ICT courses, students can acquire innovation and entrepreneurship skills as well.” – says Dr Zoltán Horváth, Dean of the ELTE Faculty of Informatics. He adds that students who complete the programme get a double degree, in addition to an EIT ICT Labs innovation and entrepreneurship certificate, and they can gain experience due to study trips abroad and internships.

The admission requirements include a BSc degree in ICT, electrical engineering or mathematics. ELTE and BME expect applications until 30 May 2014 from those students who want to spend the first year in Berlin or Trento and the second year in Budapest. Certificates on English proficiency as well as on education have to be enclosed to the application, in addition to the letter of motivation and the description of an innovative idea. Those who plan to study in Helsinki, Stockholm or at Dutch universities in the first year and in Budapest in the second year could apply until 1 April 2014.
